2010 Trends in Design and Development

ie6_img.jpg

Is this the year for big things in Design and Development? Will we finally be saying goodbye to IE6? Our team shares some thoughts on this topic.

Drupal 7
Drupal is without a doubt the leading open source Content Management System in the world. Every Drupal release brings with it several exciting and mind-blowing features for programmers to get sites up and running with minimal effort. The new Drupal 7 release will be available early 2010. Full feature list here: http://drupal.org/node/156281

Web3.0 and Google’s Involvement
Google has introduced the next major step in Web3.0 on 4 December 2009. 2 People Googling for the same keyword from 2 different computers in the same office will start yielding different results based on the user’s personal preference, hobbies, interests etc. This is the first successful attempt at structuring the web into relevant chunks.

Goodbye IE6
Digg, Facebook and YouTube are dropping support for Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in 2010. With these major players in the web industry (along with many, many others) blocking users, Internet Explorer 6 will hopefully drop to only a 5% penetration rate by the end of 2010, which will finally give web developers the ability to break free from the constraints holding the web back.

Adobe Flex Builder and Catalyst
Adobe is trying very hard to marry the relationships between designers and developers to create rich internet applications. With the release of Flash Builder 4.0 and Catalyst early 2010 that will finally become a reality. It will create a new dawn in web development when designers can create a Photoshop or Illustrator image of a website and directly transform that into a fully functional web application without HTML-cut ups, programming etc.

Mobile Application
Mobile apps will continue to boom as we predict that mobile use will finally become common place. Worldwide, the iPhone alone accounts for about 33% of mobile web traffic and predictions are that the number of mobile web users will hit one billion by 2010.
